Marco: When you received this post/appointment from Andrea Botto, director of “Rapallo Fotografia Contemporanea”, were you familiar with the italian photographic culture, or know any authors, editors…?
Charlotte: Yes I did. And I was already aware of Fantom Magazine. I worked in Rome in 2003 and 2004 and participated in an experimental residency for three months in Palermo in 2006. But of course not to the extent that I am now aware. Both Francesco Zanot and Andrea Botto have pointed me to work by Italian photographers as well as collections and
museums.
Marco: Quando hai ricevuto questo incarico da Andrea Botto, direttore di “Rapallo Fotografia Contemporanea, conoscevi qualche esperienza della cultura fotografica italiana, autori, curatori…?
Charlotte: Sì ne ero al corrente ed ero già a conoscenza della rivista Fantom. Ho lavorato a Roma nel 2003 e nel 2004, mentre nel 2006 ho fatto parte di un gruppo sperimentale di tre mesi a Palermo. Ma, naturalmente, non nella misura in cui ne sono a conoscenza ora. Sia Francesco Zanot che Andrea Botto mi hanno informato su fotografi italiani così come collezioni e musei.
Marco: How did the image sequence develop, together with the curator Francesco Zanot, to give shape to the exhibit “Al lavoro” and the book publication?
Charlotte: I discussed first with Francesco what the possibilities might be to work on something in the region of Liguria and then I narrowed it down with Andrea to portraying the working dogs of the area. In particular this came about when I realised that there are specific jobs identified with the region such as the truffle hunting dogs or the life guard dogs that are kept busy in the summer. I followed the design of the book step by step and Francesco, Fabrizio (book designer) and myself discussed it together.
Marco: Come è progredita la sequenza di immagini insieme al curatore Francesco Zanot, per dare corpo alla mostra “Al lavoro”e alla pubblicazione del libro?
Charlotte: All’inizio ho discusso con Francesco sulle possibilità che ci potevano essere per me di fare qualcosa in Liguria poi, con Andrea, ho ristretto il campo a ritrarre i cani da lavoro di quell’area. In particolare quando ho scoperto che ci sono lavori specifici che sono abituali per i cani della regione, come quelli addestrati a cercare tartufi e quelli addestrati per il salvataggio durante la stagione estiva. Il design del libro è stato seguito da me personalmente, passo dopo passo, ed è stato oggetto di discussione con Francesco e Fabrizio Radaelli (book designer).
Marco: In your very personal project do you think you’ve said something about the Italian specific? Do you think the culture of an area also affects the artist’s personal work?
Charlotte: In this case it did affect my work more in the way that I was challenged
to be inventive with the conditions of the assignment. The beginnings and
experience of working with Andrea and Francesco though have convinced me that
the Italian approach is truly fascinating and engaging and I found it very
inspiring. In a country where there is little if no governmental support
for the arts it is really stimulating to see the thoroughness with which
curators and photographers work here.
Marco: Nel tuo personalissimo progetto pensi di aver raccontato anche qualcosa dello specifico italiano? Credi che la cultura di un luogo incida anche sul lavoro personale dell’artista?
Charlotte: In questo caso ha maggiormente inciso sulla qualità del mio lavoro la sfida ad essere particolarmente innovativo, considerate le difficoltà dell’incarico. L’esperienza di lavoro con Andrea e Francesco mi ha convinto che l’approccio italiano è veramente appassionato e coinvolgente e l’ho trovato fonte di grande ispirazione. In un paese dove si fa poco per le arti, mancando l’apporto del governo, è di grande stimolo vedere la minuziosità con la quale curatori e fotografi lavorano.
Marco: a “Keyword” you feel necessary to interpret contemporary photography today…
Charlotte: That is a tough question but I think that photography is used in so many ways today in the realm of the visual arts that it might be ‘diversity’.
Marco: una “Keyword” per te fondamentale per interpretare oggi la fotografia contemporanea…
Charlotte: Questa è una questione spinosa ma penso che la fotografia oggigiorno sia usata in così tanti modi nel campo delle arti visive e potrebbe essere “diversità’.
